Southport Weekender 46 May 7th / 8th / 9th 2010

The Southport Weekender is now in it's 23rd year and May 2010 will see a new era for the World famous Weekend event as it will become an annual party dropping the November date from their calender. It is a real shame but under the current ecomonical climate it makes totally sense and will secure the future and ensure the quality of this legendary institution.

For those not familar with the Southport Weekender it is a music festival that attracts a 5000 capacity crowd to the indoor Pontins holiday complex in Southport, North West England. Having evolved from it's beginnings as a soul music weekender, the event now stands as the most musically diverse music weekender in the U.K. calendar. PERIOD!

From the R&B, soul and hip hop of The Funkbase and the main room dance sounds of The Powerhouse, to the soul aficionados Connossieurs' Corner and the eclectic styles of The Beat Bar, the Southport Weekender provides a feast of the world's freshest DJ talent, accompanied by party starting live acts and guest PAs.

With just the one weekender in 2010, demand is obvioulsy massive. The weekender costs £159 pp and this includes the on-site accomodation of the 4 or 6 berth chalets. The tickets went on sale at the start of December and already there are only a few hundred places left!!! A truley staggering feat considering the time of year, but it is testiment to the support this event commands. There is no advertising, it's all done from past experiences and word of mouth.

The event organisers are already making a start on the DJ & Live performance line ups which are normally announced a couple of months before the event. So watch this space for further updates.

Mark the dates in diaries, 7th / 8th / 9th May 2010 and if you haven't already done so book up now before it's too late!

For more information check out Southport Weekender

See you on the dancefloor.

Akai APC40 Ableton Performance Controller

Introducing the hotly anticipated new Akai APC40 Ableton Performance Controller. Much more than just a USB MIDI controller this is an instrument in it’s own right that allows the user to interface with Ableton Live taking the application back to it’s original performance roots. It’s very much a plug and play device with minimal set up to get underway, just a couple of USB plugs and boom your in.

The APC40 boasts bidirectional communication between the controller and the Live interface which means that any little tweaks you do on the APC40 will also be represented graphically in the Live environment… cool hey! Other features include customizable sliders, buttons and knobs, Session Overview, Transport Control, Tempo Control, Clip Launch, Button Matrix and lots more.

Akai are calling this the link between the human and the computer that will facilitate the perfect musical creativite expression and who can argue with that! The controller has so much flexibility and options of use from an artist producing electronic music to the more creative DJ using LIVE to remix tracks on the fly.

The Akai APC40 is retailing at £400 but is available at Edinburgh's Best Music Shop Rikki's Music for £379. Follow the link for further details. We dig!

In the picture the Limited Edition SL1200GLD turntable released to celebrate 30 years of production.

A sad day indeed…

Panasonic this week announced they were ceasing production of the legendary Technics SL1200 and the SL1210 turntables. The last ones will fall off the production line towards the end of February 2010 after almost 35 years as the industry standard.

The SL1200 direct drive turntable, a classic design and one most of us cut our teeth on, first appeared back in the 1970’s and quickly became the deck of choice for DJs’ and clubs the world over. Other more robust models followed such as the SL1200 MK2 and the SL1210 that featured a slide pitch control, pop up light and stop/start button.

Panasonic stated the reason for pulling the plug was the decline of sales and the difficulty to compete in an every increasing digital world where most media is now no longer black plastic but MP3 files.

Robust is the word. I invested £500 for my pair of SL1210’s back in 1992 and they are still going strong today. Granted maybe the pitch control is a little bit loose and the lids are slightly cracked but they still hold sync true when doing a beat mix.

It’s hard to imagine a world without these iconic symbols so if you don’t already own a pair I strongly recommend you save some cash and invest in something that won’t be around for very much longer.
